To Mama and Papa, taking care of the Rosens is a non-negotiable responsibility. Mama repeats this quote several times throughout the novel. Although Ellen's dark hair makes it hard for her to hide her identity, she can avoid confrontations with German soldiers by making an effort to remain inconspicuous.
